Friday Inspiration - Mid-Century Modern Style

Today's Friday Inspiration is all about Mid-Century Modern Design and how to get the look with furniture and accessories from Argos:-

Image Inspiration via my Mid-Century Modern Pinterest Board
Mid-Century Modern describes a design period from roughly 1933 - 1965 where designers like Charles Eames and British Furniture Manufacturer Ecrol were designing modern pieces of furniture with clean lines, excellent quality and using colours like grey, olive green and sludgy yellow and mixing wood, metal and plastic. I try and hunt out original Mid-Century Modern pieces at flea markets and junk shops and I have successfully bought a few original items for my home. I love how the classic designs are still very on trend 40 years on. I actually like to mix old and new to create an eclectic look. There are lots of great new Mid-Century Modern inspired furniture and accessories out there at the moment, like this oak sideboard featured below which can be found here at Argos. I think this style works really well in our Living and Dining spaces because here the furniture is key to the rooms overall design. A classic retro style sofa will give your room a trendy look and a sideboard is a great addition, proving storage and somewhere to display artwork, vases and lamps. How about adding a slightly tropical statement wallpaper too, think giant palm leaves, flamingos and banana leaf prints. I'm also loving the Emmett oak dining table and chairs with black faux leather seat pads from Argos, the set reminds me of Danish Mid-Century Modern chairs. To find more dining room furniture take a look here at the rest of Argos furniture collection.

My top 10 favourite new Argos products are:-
1. Arthouse Lagoon Wallpaper
2. Emmett Oak Dining Table and 6 Chairs 3. Habitat Kura Paper Shade 4. Perth Modern Sideboard 5. Habitat Blossom Side table in Yellow 6. Habitat Sakura Floral Cushion 7. Habitat Momo Sofa in Saffron Yellow 8. Heart of House Gibson Double Bed 9. Habitat Alena Mug 10. Brooklyn Large Sofa in Olive Green

Guest Bedroom Styling Tips

Have you got family coming to stay with you over the Festive period like I have? I've been working on turning our spare room into a luxury space for our guests to stay so I thought I'd share some of my styling tips.

* A comfy bed is a must, surprisingly as well as carpets, rugs and flooring Carpetright also stock a range of beds, you can choose from from a selection of wooden, faux leather, metal or fabric bed frames or how about updating your existing bed with a new headboard or mattress?

* To give your bed a luxury feel dress it with cotton or linen covers in neutral colours add a throw or blanket and a few colourful cushions. H&M home do lovely linen covers in a soft grey.

* Whether you choose wall lights, bedside lamps or quirky heart shaped fairy lights make sure your guests can easily reach the on/off switches from the bed.

* Add a clothes rail to the room for somewhere for your guests to hang up their Christmas party clothes or if you don't have the space for a rail, a couple of hooks on the back of the door with a few coat hangers is a good idea.
* Finally the finishing touches, add a small posy of flowers to the bedside table or shelf for a sweet welcome to the room. Leave a tray of drinks and snacks for your guests and remember to have an available plug socket free for them to charge their phones/ipads and for plugging in hairdryers!!

Eclectic Romantic Table Styling With Tesco

Have you seen the new ranges Tesco has recently launch for their Autumn /Winter 14 Homewares collection? They have some seriously affordable and very lovely new designs. I have bought a few new pieces for my own home and so I thought I'd share how I styled my Eclectic Romantic dining table using products sourced at Tesco.

So the elements from Tesco I used to style my table are:- Grey Tartan throw (Which I used as my tablecloth!! - Why not?) Grey Floral china, Cakestand, Recycled glasses, Vintage style glasses, Grey cotton napkins, Bottle vase, Tortoiseshell tealight holders, Grey Glass jar Candle, Marie Therese Chandelier in Mink, and the strawberry cupcakes were from the Bakery Project in store. Yum!

I wanted to create an Eclectic Romantic feel for this tablesetting so to get the electric vibe going I mixed up some styles and patterns, I blended the soft grey tartan throw/ table cover with delicate floral design on the china, vintage style embossed pattern glasses and a touch of leopard print from the tealight holders. It all works together because of the colour scheme, I've used a base colour palette of greys, dusky pink and a good dose of white and the vibrant pink flowers with green foiliage to give the table a pop and something natural. The black and gold in the leopard print keeps the look on trend and I think adds a little quirkiness. I used these gorgeous recycled glass wine glasses and vintage style embossed pattern tumblers. I wasn't to precious about how the napkins were folded as I wanted the table to have a pretty relaxed feel and to not look too formal so I just roughly folded them.
Flowers are a key ingredient when creating a romantic setting here I used dusky pink hydrangeas picked from my garden loosely in a posy with pink stocks from Tesco and actually faux peonies - I'm not usually a fan of faux flowers but when the flowers I really want to use are not in season I look for good fakes and when they are mixed with fresh cut flowers it can really work. I used my mix of old and new chairs around the table, the old ones I bought from flea markets and charity shops and the new ones are Eames inspired. I added ribbons to each cutlery set using a mix of grey and green ribbons and tied in a bow. The ceramic cake stand acts as a centerpiece, I chose these strawberry cupcakes because of the pink icing swirls. It's nice to serve foodie treats which match your table setting!

My Tesco Home this Autumn

Have you seen the new Autumn / Winter 2014 collection of gorgeous homewares now available from Tesco instore and online? They have some great items to update your home this Autumn. I'm loving their recycled green glass bottle vases which I'm using at home to display fresh Autumn cuttings from my garden, I've styled them along with a grey glass candle jar and an antique oil painting I recently bought from Ebay. I'm also a fan of their new white ceramic collection how cute is the cow butter dish and jelly mould? I've arranged my new pieces on my kitchen shelf. They are also selling lots of lovely dusky pink accessories - which I love, I've long been following the Dusky Pink trend, via Pinterest. This Dorset lamp in chalk pink is a welcome addition to my desk and the fringed edge cushion is prettying up my living room, I like to mix textures to create a cosy feel so I'm using their soft faux fur cushion and for a bit of sparkle their sliver beaded cushion. Have you bought anything new for your home from Tesco this season yet?

Holiday Snaps!

I just returned home from two blissful weeks in Cabopino, Marbella, Spain where I was on Holiday with my husband. We spent our days relaxing and sunbathing on the gorgeous beach, swimming in the sea and our evenings exploring Marbella. We were there on the day of our 3rd Wedding Anniversary and it was the perfect place to celebrate - I love visiting Marbella Old Town and we enjoyed a delicious Paella and a couple of glasses of Snagira. Did you get away this Summer?

Friday Inspiration - Dark Floral Trend

Part of being a stylist is to keep an eye out for emerging fashion/interior trends and although floral prints have been around for a while recently I've noticed a shift from delicate romantic and pastel floral prints to dark and moody designs which I've long been a fan of. I started a Dark Florals Trend Board on Pinterest a while ago where I've been pinning lots of inspirational images which I've come across, like the pics above, so this weeks Friday Inspiration is all about this fabulous dark and handsome trend...

If you follow me on Instagram you would have seen the above pic of my current inspiration wall in my office...just some of my ideas for my upcoming shoots this Autumn / Winter. After a flurry of designers showing the dark side of florals in their A/W shows, I expect to see this trend hitting high street stores soon. I already spotted a few great items at Espirt...
Love this all-over floral pattern sweatshirt and floral print racksack.
Espirt were also stocking a great pair of silky floral trousers with this pretty inky blue floral pattern above in their Summer 14 collection.

Typically fashion trends last a lot longer in our homes than in our wardrobes so if you want to give your home a little trend update don't worry if your not sure how long these dark florals are sticking around... I've got a feeling this pretty moody vibe is here to stay for a good while ... I've already seen a few home ranges sporting this style from M&S, H&M and lets not forget the dark and wonderfully flamboyant designs of House of Hackney!! So how do you translate this trend into your homes?

*You could add a dark floral print wallpaper feature wall and if your not convinced you want to go too dark, how about making a patchwork wall with mix and match wallpapers with a few darker designs thrown in.

*Make diy cushions using dark floral fabrics to adorn your bed or sofa, choose fabrics with black, charcoal, navy or deep mulberry backgrounds and all over floral patterns.

* Mix floral patterns with soft greys, dusky pinks and white to keep the look up to date and not too Gothic.

* Or simply buy some flowers in deep dark tones and arrange in the darkest vase you own.

What do you think of this trend? Have you started spotting dark floral prints everywhere you go I like I have?? Will you be wearing the look this A/W and are you planning to add this trend to your home decor?
